The new Mathematics Syllabus aims to develop students’ mathematical thinking, understanding, competence and confidence in the application of mathematics, their creativity, enjoyment and appreciation of the subject, and their engagement in lifelong learning. The subjects currently offered by the Mathematics faculty include: YEAR 7 & 8 - mandatory Project work in Term 3 includes the Year 7 Fraction project and Yr 8 Luna Park project  YEAR 9 & 10 - School Certificate course The Stage 5 course provides several endpoints for the continuum of learning in mathematics resulting in the School Certificate credential in this subject. While all students are expected to achieve the outcomes of the Stage 5.1 level, a majority will proceed to master the outcomes at the 5.2 level and, of these, a selection will continue to achieve success in the 5.3 level. Stage 5.1 Foundational mathematics for students not requiring Stage 6 mathematics Stage 5.2 Intermediary mathematics for students wishing to attempt the General Mathematics course in Stage 6. Stage 5.3 A more indepth course preparing students for the Mathematics and Extension courses in Stage 6.

Teaching and learning in mathematics involves technology at all stages. Students are encouraged to demonstrate their knowledge using various forms of assessment. Assessment tasks include off-site assignments, computer research projects, production of instructional games as well as formal examinations. Teachers use the online mathematics program Mathletics to set and monitor homework and students are encouraged to use the program to assist them in their revision. |
